What is a paranormal phenomenon?

What we humans term "the paranormal" consists of phenomena which lie outside the realm of normal human experience. These paranormal experiences cannot be scientifically proven nor disproven, yet regular people experience these things in their everyday lives.

Paranormal phenomena fall loosely into one of four categories: cryptozoology, extraterrestrial manifestations, parapsychology, and non-corporeal spiritual entities.

Cryptozoology

Cryptozoology is the study of and search for animals which fall outside of a contemporary zoological taxonomy. The physical existence of these animals, termed "cryptids", has yet to be proven. Such creatures include faeries, werewolves, the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, mermaids, unicorns, dragons, and chimeras.

Extraterrestrial manifestations

This type of manifestation has by and large replaced the appearances of faery folk which were common around the world in previous centuries. Extraterrestrial manifestations include sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) such as flying saucers and reported alien abductions. The bodies of some of these alien beings have been retrieved from wrecks and are reportedly in the hands of government officials.

Are we alone in the universe? Perhaps. Many scientists such as the researchers at SETI (the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) scan the universe for clues that other life forms exist in our universe.

Parapsychology

Parapsychology is the study of psychic phenomena. It is considered a pseudo-science by many scientists. Parapsychology includes the whole of what we term "clairsentience" in addition to energy work. These phenomena are of information which cannot be sensed with the five physical senses of a normal human. Such perceptions are instead sensed within the mind of the individual.

Non-corporeal spiritual entities

This is the most common form of paranormal phenomena. Spiritual entities are usually what we term "ghosts" -- the spirits of the deceased -- but may also include other types of entities such as deities and angelic or demonic beings. The entities will have a glowing translucent quality to them when they appear "in person". Some entities may manifest through scent or light only.

The presence of a spiritual entity can be noted in the opening and closing of doors and the movement of objects. Often a measurably cold draft may be felt in an otherwise warm room. Entities may also possess an individual for the purposes of communication with the living.
